The Government of Maldives has transferred 12 Sri Lankan nationals serving prison sentences in the Maldives

10 April 2016, Male'; The Government of Maldives has transferred 12 Sri Lankan nationals serving prison sentences in the Maldives to prisons in Sri Lanka, this morning. The prisoners were transferred under the Law 2014/38 Transfer of Prisoners Act and the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the Transfer of Prisoners,” signed on 12 February 2008.

A “Handover Instrument” was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon and the High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Major General (Retd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B Thoradeniya. The “Handover Instrument” was handed over to the High Commissioner by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the time of departure of the prisoners.

The prisoners departed to Sri Lanka this morning. Their departure was witnessed by High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, senior officials of the Maldives Correctional Service and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
