22 March 2016, Rome; The Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, His Excellency Paolo Gentiloni, today. At a luncheon meeting hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, both Ministers discussed on areas of furthering bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Foreign Minister Dunya commended on Italy's commitment and special attention it gives to Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives. Italian Foreign Minister assured continued support to the Maldives in combatting climate change.
Since this year also marks the 50 anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations, both Ministers discussed on ways to celebrate the occasion.
Earlier this morning, Foreign Minister Dunya also met with the Deputy Minister for Environment of Italy Her Excellency M.me Silvia Velvo. At the meeting held at the Ministry of Environment of Italy, Foreign Minister Dunya highlighted on the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives to climate change and other adverse weather conditions. Minister Dunya also expressed appreciation to the Government of Italy for the contribution to the Maldives to tackle Climate Change problems in the Maldives and also commended on Italy for its commitment to SIDS and the special attention it gives to the extraordinary challenges SIDS face. The Deputy Minister for Environment during her remarks noted the leadership role played by the Maldives as AOSIS chair and expressed commitment to assist SiDS countries.
Both the meeting was attended by Counsellor of Maldives Mission to EU Ms. Fathimath Ghina and Senior Desk Officer of the Ministry Mr. Hussain Jahhaz.
