Maldives condemns the attacks on the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its Consulate in Iran

21 January 2016, Male'; The Maldives has strongly condemned the attacks on the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and its Consulate in Mashhad. In a statement delivered by Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, at the Extraordinary Meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on Cause of Aggressions on Saudi Diplomatic Missions in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives echoed its support to the Government of Saudi Arabia.

Minister Dunya stated that an attack on a diplomatic Mission is of grave concern and the failure to prevent these attacks by the host country represents a serious breach to two of the most important international conventions that we pledged to abide by. The Maldives also called upon the Government of Iran to take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of these atrocious crimes are brought to justice.

In her statement, Minister Dunya also condemned the illegal Israeli settlement in Palestine and call on countries around the world, to support the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital and to recognize its sovereignty in Palestinian territories in the pre-1967 borders. She further stated that the greatest challenge facing the Muslim Ummah today in the terrorist activities carried out in the name of Islam, the religion of compassion.

Continuing with her statement Minister Dunya expressed that Islam is a civilization, one that teaches and promotes peace, tolerance, compassion, and above all, modernity. She called upon countries of the world to take a strategic decision to promote a culture of respect in their societies as a tool to fight against the menace of terrorism and to work together and face common challenges as one Ummah.

Concluding her statement Minister Dunya stated that the Maldives supports the peaceful resolution of conflicts and is confident that this would lead to strengthening the global fight against terrorism. The Maldives does not believe that the use of violence to achieve religious or political goals is justifiable in any circumstances. Said Minister Dunya
