"SDGs present a golden opportunity for small states to build their resilience and reduce their dependency" - Foreign Secretary

25 November 2015, Malta; Foreign Secretary of Maldives, H.E. Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed has attended the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting held today in Malta. A number of issues were discussed at the Foreign Ministers meeting today before the commencement of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on 27 November 2015.

The Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting will take place for two days from 25 to 26 November 2015. Today’s Session focused on the Economic and Development issues of Climate Change, Sustainable Development Goals and on Small States.

Speaking at the Session on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) the Foreign Secretary stated that the SDGs present a golden opportunity for small states to build their resilience and reduce their dependency. He further stated that Maldives would like to see the Commonwealth play a greater role in using its influence to assist developing members to secure the efficient and green technologies are needed to develop sustainably, and improve the technical capacity of our populations.

Foreign Secretary H.E. Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed was accompanied by H. E. Mr. Ahmed Shiaan, High Commissioner of Maldives to Belgium and Mr. Hassan Shifau, Acting High Commissioner at the Maldives High Commission in UK and Ms. Leesha Mohamed, Senior Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Maldives joined the Commonwealth as a special member on 1982 and became a full member on 20 July 1985.
