Statement from the Government of the Maldives on the arrest of Vice President Ahmed Adeeb

The Government of the Maldives has today announced that the Maldives Police Service have arrested Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor. The arrest has been undertaken under a court warrant in connection to the investigation into a bomb blast that occurred last month on the Presidential speedboat. 

 Vice President Adeeb was detained by the Police immediately on his return from an official visit to China.

 Commenting on the arrest at a press briefing called today by the Maldives Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaaz said:

 “Vice President Adeeb has been detained by the police following an extensive investigation by both local and international agencies. The charges are extremely serious, and the government has had to act decisively.

 “The Vice President will be offered every opportunity for a full defence and the government will follow all due process in line with Maldivian law”.

 Commenting for the Government he Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon said:

 “With the evidence of an internationally led investigation appearing to link the Vice President to the attack, the Government and agencies had no choice but to act decisively. This matter is extremely unfortunate. However, the administration is determined to ensure that the investigation and any subsequent actions are conducted swiftly and with complete transparency.

 “The President remains unwavering in his commitment to lead a strong, unified government that will continue to meet the serious challenges facing the people of the Maldives”.
