New Maldives Ambassador to the EU Presents Credentials

29 April 2015, Brussels; The new Ambassador of the Maldives to the European Union H.E. Mr. Ahmed Shiaan presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the European Council, H.E Mr. Donald Tusk today, at a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council in Brussels.

H.E Mr. Donald Tusk welcomed Ambassador Shiaan and congratulated him on his appointment.

In the meeting that ensued, Ambassador Shiaan and H.E Mr. Tusk discussed the challenges of climate change facing Small Island Developing State and expressed hope for the conclusion of a fair and robust agreement at COP 21 in Paris, in December this year. Ambassador Shiaan also noted that as Chair of AOSIS, the Maldives is leading the negotiations on behalf of the group and conveyed his appreciation for the support provided to the Alliance by the European Union.

Ambassador Shiaan and H.E Mr. Tusk also exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the Maldives and EU on trade, tourism, fisheries and terrorism, in addition to strengthening relations between the EU and the Maldives.  

Ambassador Shiaan was accompanied by Counsellor at the Maldives Mission in Brussels Ms. Fathimath Ghina and Third Secretary Mr. Hussain Shareef.
