21 September 2016; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim attended the Informal Meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers on the sidelines of the Seventy-first session of the United Nations General Assembly, upon the invitation extended by the event’s host Nepal, the current Chair of SAARC.
Speaking at the Meeting, Minister Asim highlighted that it is imperative to take the progress made in realizing the Millennium Development Goals and the work towards Agenda 2030 for sustainable development at the regional level, to maximize the opportunities to complement national and regional sustainable development efforts.
In his remarks, Minister Asim assured the full commitment and support of the Government of Maldives to members of SAARC and the organization as a whole, in the efforts to combat the global challenge of climate change and international terrorism.
Concluding the speech, Minister Asim expressed hope to work together on mutual cooperation towards improving the welfare and quality of life in the SAARC region, and reiterated that the Government of Maldives will give full support to the undertakings by SAARC.
The Maldives meeting was also attended by Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed.
