16 August 2016; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim, today met with Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India, Her Excellency Sushma Swaraj.
At the meeting held at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Minister Asim extended warm felicitations and good wishes to the Government and the people of India on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day. Both Ministers reflected on the close bilateral ties between the two countries and discussed ways of enhance cooperation on matters of mutual concern and strategic importance to both countries. The talks also highlighted on the key areas of cooperation agreed at the 5th Maldives-India Joint Commission meeting held in Maldives on October 2015.
Minister Asim is visiting India on the invitation by Minister Sushma Swaraj. This is his first official visit abroad since assuming office. Following the meeting, Minister Sushma also hosted an official luncheon to welcome Minister Asim to India.
Later today Minister Asim will pay a courtesy call on Vice President of India, H.E M. Hamid Ansari. Minister Asim was accompanied by the High Commissioner of Maldives to India, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Mohamed and visiting delegation.
