11 May 2016, New York; “Only a correct analysis of the situation will lead to correct strategies in eliminating the menace of terrorism”, the Maldives Foreign Secretary Ali Naseer Mohamed said at the UN Security Council in New York today. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on “Countering the Narrative and Ideologies of Terrorism”, Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s vision is very clear and commitment are very strong in stopping, defeating, and eliminating terrorism. The Foreign Secretary also briefed the Security Council on the key steps that President Yameen has recently taken to counter terrorism, including the enactment of the Counter Terrorism legislation last October, and the setting up of the National Counter Terrorism Center which is mandated to formulate counter-terrorism guidelines and procedures based on the analysis of international benchmarks and best practices.
Highlighting the need to get a full grasp of the ideology of terrorism, the Foreign Secretary noted the key role that the United Nations can play in leading global efforts in this regard, by working quickly to finalize the comprehensive convention on international terrorism, and helping bring countries together to facilitate dialogue.
The Security Council Open Debate on the subject is held under the Presidency of Egypt and is convened back to back with the High Level Thematic Debate on Peace and Security hosted by the President of the General Assembly.
