Government Invites Opposition MDP for Exclusive Direct Talks with the Government

Issued By

07 March 2016; The Government of Maldives has invited the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party for exclusive direct talks with the Government, if the party wishes to explore possible options for leniency on the issue of former President Nasheed’s prison sentence.

The invitation was sent today, 7 March 2016, by the President’s Office and the meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, 8 March 2016, at 1300 hours.

The exclusive invitation extended to MDP is part of the Government’s initiative to provide a climate of sincerity, transparency and trust where all Parties, including the opposition, can discuss their disagreements and move forward towards development and meaningful progress.

President Yameen initiated Political Party Talks last month. Two meetings have been held to date. The First meeting was held on 2 March and second meeting was held on 3 March 2016. Except the MDP and Adhaalath Party, all the other political parties in the country participated in the meetings.
