| President Dr Mohamed Waheed and First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain departed London yesterday after a five day visit that saw them attend celebrations in honour of HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Over the course of the official Diamond Jubilee engagements, President Waheed and Madam Ilham met and talked with members of the Royal Family including HM The Queen, HRH The Prince of Wales, and HRH The Duke of Cambridge; and many senior British leaders including Prime Minister The Rt Hon David Cameron MP, and Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary The Rt Hon William Hague MP.
Speaking about the National Service of Thanksgiving in honour of HM The Queen he attended on Tuesday, President Waheed wrote on twitter that it was “a magnificent moment of reflection on good governance”, and that he was “thankful to be a participant and witness.”
President Waheed also used the trip to hold bilateral meetings with Sri Lankan President HE Mr Mahindra Rajapakse, and Commonwealth Secretary-General HE Mr Kamalesh Sharma.
One of the highlights of the visit was a reception with the Maldivian students and families based in the UK held at the High Commission of Maldives.
Before his departure to Maldives, President Waheed also met with the UK media, to speak about recent political developments in Maldives and the upcoming Rio +20 Climate Summit.
